The training will take place over five weekend days, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, with two-hour sessions totaling 10 hours, and will be conducted in person.

Course Objectives

This training aims to introduce the catalogs and documents in the Ottoman archives and guide researchers interested in maritime history on how to locate, read, and utilize these sources in their studies.

Participant Features

It is suitable for all undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers, who are interested in maritime history and have varying levels of Ottoman Turkish proficiency. The training will be delivered partly or entirely in Turkish, with occasional explanations in English. Therefore, in addition to knowledge of Turkish grammar, participants need the ability to understand and follow written and spoken content.

Syllabus

Topics (10 hours)

• Introduction to Ottoman Archives
o Introduction to the Directorate of State Archives of the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye and other archives, with a focus on maritime-related archive catalogues.

• Accessing Archival Documents and Research Methods
o Using online and physical catalogues in the archives; methods for document retrieval.

• Types of Maritime Documents
o Introduction to the types and characteristics of registers and documents such as Gemi Jurnali, Sened-i Bahrî, İzn-i Sefîne, etc.

• Document Usage and Analysis
o Fundamental transcription techniques for translating Ottoman Turkish documents.
o Practical reading and transcription work on selected documents.

• Transforming Archival Documents into Knowledge
o Formulating a research plan based on the documents and recommendations for advanced studies.
